Color Blocking

Top: Forever 21, Shorts: Target

My affair with color blocking began when I was working on a fashion show in San Diego with Gretchen Productions. We decided to incorporate this fantastic theme into one of the scenes and it turned out to be my favorite. It was such a unique feeling to be able to pair all different colors and have them look good together. I suppose on this particular day I put more of a neon twist to it, however, I really like this look when it is done with bold colors. (Which is a change, because as a kid I liked the ‘bold’ box of markers the least.) I’m sure you will see more color block coming from me in the near future.

A few guidelines that I like to work with:

1. What works best for this style is bold solid pieces. Pastels are too whimsical and if there is a print you usually don’t get the same effect.
2. The look is best with three pieces as opposed to just two, showing a real comparison in color.
3. Try to use colors on opposite sides of the color wheel to add more interest.
Now throw out those guidelines, because I obviously didn’t adhere to them, and do whatever you think looks good.
